Nirvana Spa Offers ‘Paths To Wellness’ Maria & Kristen Plass | November 18, 2009
KINGWOOD TWP. – A mother and daughter who have found alternative paths to their own health are eager to help others. They have established a spa at their Kingwood Township home and named it Nirvana.
Maria and Kristen Plass believe that a natural way of living – which includes healthy food, a positive outlook and a diversified exercise regimen – will promote longevity and quality of life. The Nirvana spa reflects the lifestyle-wellness philosophy that started years ago for both of them.
Maria became interested in alternative medicine shortly after Kristen was born. After she suffered from a lingering illness, a friend steered her toward nutritional supplements, and she says these restored her health.
Kristen’s interest was spurred after suffering a bout of mono in high school which left her with chronic fatigue.
“Conventional medicine provided some temporary relief, but the side-effects were devastating and took years to rectify. After struggling for years with CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome) and weight issues, she finally changed her eating and lifestyle patterns, basically reinventing herself,” said her mother.
The spa was established because “we felt a overwhelming need to enlighten people into taking control of their health while at the same time demystifying alternative health options by understanding the science behind the therapy,” said Maria.
She offers reiki, integrative energy techniques and chakra-balancing sessions aimed at opening and balancing the body’s energy fields. She also provides nutritional counseling to assist the body’s self-healing process and assist with weight reduction. Kristen will be instructing classes in Hatha Yoga, Pilates, Yolates and Sun Salutation.
Nirvana also offers an ionic foot bath and a paraffin hand treatment. The Plasses hope to add the services of a certified massage therapist soon.
Visitors are given complimentary organic or herbal teas, and there are plans to expand the chai tea lattes, fruit smoothies and homemade breads and snacks.
“We try to go organic whenever possible and participate in a local organic produce co-op. We use these wonderful, nutritious ingredients in our baked goods. Our healthy-eating philosophy is the backbone of our existence,” said Maria.
All new customers receive either a free mini-chakra-balancing session or foot detox with the purchase of one other service.
For details, call 797-3338. Nirvana is at 95 Barbertown-Point Breeze Road. Its hours are Mondays through Thursdays, 6-9 p.m., and weekends, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., with other hours by appointment.

Nirvana Spa Offers ‘Paths To Wellness’ Maria and Kristen Plass
“We Really Do Have a Passion For This!” | November 17th, 2009
KINGWOOD TOWNSHIP —Mom Maria and daughter Kristen Plass had struggled with personal health challenges over the years, but then discovered the healing world of holistic wellness.
As the two became living proof of the positive impact these treatments and practices can have, it was only natural that the pair would want to share their successes with others. The Plasses created the Experience Nirvana Spa and Holistic Wellness Center in their home.
“We really got into the holistic thing,” Kristen said. “We wanted to see if we could make a business out of something we had so much passion for to help others.”
The word nirvana is a Hindu word for great peace or bliss. Experience Nirvana offers a wide range of healing services and treatment in a comfortable location in rural Hunterdon County, offering many paths to the goals of rest, harmony and joy.
Don’t be surprised as you approach the Experience Nirvana spa address. It is the family’s home in a residential neighborhood. But the sounds of peaceful music and aroma of candles let’s you know you’re in the right place. Once the shoes come off, you’ll be quite comfortable.
The Plasses offer Chakra Balancing to maximize the body’s energy flow; Reiki, the Japanese touch therapy that promotes healing, stress reduction and relaxation; Ionic Foot Detox to eliminate body toxins through the feet; and Paraffin Hand Treatment for sensitive or arthritic hands.
Also offered are various types of body massage including Swedish, deep tissue, medical, sports or chair. The pair offers classes in Integrated Hatha Yoga, Sun Salutation Yoga, Pilates body conditioning, and Yolates — mind and body connection exercises that blend the flexibility, meditative, and endurance aspects of yoga with the muscle strengthening, lengthening and core toning of Pilates.
Experience Nirvana began with a few core services, but the Plasses continue to add more and more services to the menu.
“We really do have a passion for this,” Kristen said. “We’re working hard to build this up.”
Kristen hopes to incorporate classes in raw food preparation and vegan menus shortly, and the spa will offer herbal body wraps starting in December.
The spa will play host 11 a.m. to 5p.m. Dec. 20, 2008 to a holiday gathering with speakers, including Dr. Jodi Dinnerman on stress management and lifestyle coaching, Maria Weatherspool on the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda, Ernie Torres on the Emotional Freedom Technique and a performance by folk-rock singer-songwriter Sharon Silverstein.
